Moon magic

A beginner's guide to moon rituals

You don't need special tools — just the moon, a notebook and a few quiet minutes. Here's how to start.

Working with the moon is one of the simplest ways to begin a witchy practice. The moon moves through its phases every 29.5 days, and each phase carries its own energy.

The two big moments

New moon — begin. The sky is dark and full of possibility. Set intentions: what do you want to grow this month? Write them in the present tense, as if they're already true.

Full moon — release and give thanks. The moon is at its brightest. Look back at your intentions, celebrate what's grown, and let go of what's holding you back.

A simple full moon ritual

  1. Find a quiet spot where you can see the moon (or simply imagine it).
  2. Light a candle and take three slow breaths.
  3. Write down what you're grateful for, and what you're ready to release.
  4. Read the release list aloud, then tear it up.
  5. Leave a jar of water out overnight — your moon water for the month ahead.

That's it. The magic is in doing it regularly, and noticing how you feel.

Keeping a dream journal

Your dreams are messages from your subconscious. A dream journal helps you remember them — and understand them.
