Keeping a dream journal
Your dreams are messages from your subconscious. A dream journal helps you remember them — and understand them.
We all dream every night, but most dreams vanish within minutes of waking. A dream journal catches them before they go.
How to start
- Keep a notebook and pen beside your bed — not your phone.
- As soon as you wake, before moving too much, write whatever you remember: images, colours, people, feelings.
- Give the dream a title. It helps you remember it later.
- Note what's happening in your life right now — dreams often respond to it.
Common symbols
- Water: emotions. Calm water, calm feelings; stormy seas, overwhelm.
- Teeth falling out: worries about how you're seen, or a change you feel unprepared for.
- Being chased: something you're avoiding in waking life.
- Flying: freedom, or a wish to rise above a situation.
Symbols are personal, though. What does the image mean to you? After a few weeks, your own dream language starts to appear.
