Tarot for beginners: pulling your first card
Tarot isn't about predicting the future — it's a mirror for your intuition. Here's how to start reading.
A tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana (big life themes, like The Moon or The Star) and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits — Cups (emotions), Wands (passion), Swords (thoughts) and Pentacles (money and the material world).
Your first reading
- Hold the deck, breathe, and think of a gentle, open question: “What do I need to know today?”
- Shuffle until it feels right.
- Pull one card and look at it before reaching for the guidebook. What do you notice first — colours, figures, feelings?
- Then read the traditional meaning, and see how the two fit together.
Tips
- Keep a tarot journal of your daily card.
- Reversed (upside-down) cards can be read as the energy being blocked or internal — or you can simply ignore reversals when starting out.
- There are no “bad” cards. Even Death usually means an ending that makes room for something new.
